Sherburn school hosts assembly to celebrate children following martial arts competition

Four children from Sherburn Hungate Primary School competed in the Martial Arts World Championships

Sherburn Hungate Primary School in Sherburn-in-Elmet recently hosted a special assembly in honour of six of its children following a successful martial arts competition.

During the assembly, which took place just before Christmas, the children, who all attend Compass Martial Arts, showcased their martial arts skills to the other pupils, as well as the medals that they had won.

Taking part in their respective age group at the warmup contest, Finn Sargent won Bronze in the traditional kata category, Luca Appleyard won Bronze in creative kata, Lana Appleyard won Bronze in musical forms, Ellis Jones won Silver in traditional kata, Oscar Singh won Silver in creative kata, and Tiger Bakal won Gold musical forms.

Thara Smith and Will Briscombe also competed, narrowly missing out on medals, and placing 4th in their categories.

Following the warmup contest, Year 1 Thara Smith went on to compete at the Martial Arts World Championships which took place in November, alongside Oscar Singh, who is in year 2, year 4 Tiger Bakal, and Ellis Jones in year 4.

The children did incredibly well in the competition, with 4 children becoming World Champions and 1 child getting Bronze.

Commenting on their success Mr Martyn Broom, Executive Headteacher at Sherburn Hungate School, said: “We are incredibly proud of all of the children who competed in the recent warmup event, and those who went on to take part in the world championships. They worked so hard, and the number of medals that they took home is testament to that.

“In recognition of their achievements we wanted to host a special assembly which celebrated all of their successes, and so that they could present their medals to the rest of the school and put on a performance to demonstrate some of their winning moves.”
